Currently, MAX provides fixed route and demand response service (Paratransit) to various municipalities. The current service area is more than 200 square miles with a demand population base of nearly 400,000. The municipalities within the service area are Birmingham, Bessemer, Homewood, Mountain Brook, Midfield, Center Point, Hoover, Vestavia Hills, Tarrant, and Fairfield. Passenger trips and service miles are approximately three million (3,000,000) each annually.
Birmingham is the largest city in the state with a population currently estimated at 212,237, and a metro population of 1,136,650. The city was once the primary industrial center of the southern United States. At the height of the nation’s manufacturing age, the city grew so fast in population, it was called the “Magic City.” Birmingham also boasts 99 historic neighborhoods and is often referred to as the cradle of the American Civil Rights Movement.
Bessemer is located in The Birmingham-Hoover metropolitan area. Dollar General, U.S. Pipe and others have located facilities within our city. Where Bessemer once thrived through iron ore manufacturing, the city is now home to a diverse blend of industry and companies. With a mix of shopping, world-class restaurants, churches and recreational and entertainment attractions, Bessemer is a city on the move!
Mountain Brook is a town in southeastern Jefferson County, Alabama, United States and an upper middle-class suburb of Birmingham. Its estimated 2015 population is 20,691. The plans, by Boston-based landscape architect Warren H. Manning, called for estate-sized lots along winding scenic roads and denser commercial development centering on three picturesque “villages”: English Village, Mountain Brook Village and Crestline Village. Residential sections such as Cherokee Bend, Brookwood Forest, Overton, and Crestline have houses in a forest setting, with a recreational network of bridle paths.

Center Point is a newly incorporated city and a former census-designated place in northeastern Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. It is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. Center Point has a population of approximately 17,000 residents. Center Point is strategically located in central Alabama between Interstate 59 and Birmingham to the south, Gardendale and Fultondale to the West, Trussville to the East, and Pinson and Clay to the North.
Tarrant, incorporated in 1918, began with a city as industry as its center and reason for being. Today, industry continues to be the lifeblood of the city, spawning numerous residential and commercial opportunities for its citizens. Tarrant has developed all the necessary ingredients for industry to thrive. Among those include easy rail access, close proximity to major interstates and highways, nearness to a major airport, a solid and experienced labor force, a wide range of housing, land availability, all major utilities, and progressive leadership.
Fairfield is located on the west side of Jefferson County directly adjacent to the city of Birmingham founded in 1910 we were formally incorporated in 1919. Our motto is that we are in an older city moving in a new direction! We are proud to be the home of the state senator Doug Jones And Miles college. We also claim as a part of our heritage said celebrities as Willie Mays, the Controllers, George Lindsay in Cleveland Eaton just to name a few of our hometown heroes.
